For a small beach town, Tamarindo has a surprisingly big restaurant scene - from beachfront seafood and Costa Rican sodas to steakhouses, tacos, and cafés. But restaurant prices can be surprisingly big, too, and not every popular spot lives up to the hype.
We spent our time eating our way around Tamarindo (a tough assignment, obviously), finding restaurants we'd happily return to, a taco spot we kept revisiting, and one Instagram favourite that's better for drinks than dinner. Here's our honest guide to the best restaurants in Tamarindo.

Where to Eat in Tamarindo: Quick Picks
If you're short on time, our top picks are Pangas Beach Club for a memorable beachfront dinner, Little Lucha for delicious tacos and great value, and Nórdico Coffee House for your morning coffee fix.

If you're still planning your trip, our broader Tamarindo travel guide pairs well with this post, especially for figuring out where to stay and how to get around town naturally.
Quick Tips Before Eating in Tamarindo
- Expect tourist prices. Tamarindo restaurants can be surprisingly expensive, particularly for beachfront dining and cocktails. Local sodas and casual eateries offer better value.
- Book ahead for sunset dinners. During peak season (December-April), popular restaurants like Pangas Beach Club can fill up quickly.
- Carry some cash. Most restaurants accept credit cards, but a few, including Green Papaya Taco Bar, are cash-only. US dollars and Costa Rican colones are both widely accepted.
- Tipping is optional. Most sit-down restaurant bills include a 10% service charge, so additional gratuity isn't required. See our Tipping in Costa Rica guide for more details.
- Expect outdoor dining. Many restaurants are open-air, so be prepared for heat, humidity, and the occasional mosquito.
- Try a local soda. These traditional Costa Rican eateries are usually your best bet for affordable local dishes like casados and gallo pinto.
Best Restaurants in Tamarindo
If you're searching for the best restaurants in Tamarindo, these are the spots that consistently stand out for food, atmosphere, location, or overall experience.
Pangas Beach Club

If you're only going to splurge on one dinner in Tamarindo, we'd make it Pangas Beach Club. It's our pick for the best overall restaurant in town, combining excellent food with one of the most beautiful beachfront settings.
Located near the estuary at the northern end of Tamarindo Beach, Pangas has tables beneath enormous trees, with string lights overhead and the ocean just steps away. It feels special without being overly formal, especially as the sun starts setting.
Seafood is a popular choice here (we started our own meal with Shrimp Cocktail and a beautiful sunset view), but our biggest recommendation is the Volcanic Rocks steak. It's served with a sizzling volcanic stone, allowing you to finish cooking the steak to your liking right at the table. It's a memorable way to enjoy an already excellent meal.
Pangas isn't cheap, but unlike some of Tamarindo's more expensive restaurants, we think the food actually justifies the price. It's a great choice for date nights, celebrations, or simply treating yourself to a memorable dinner on the beach.
Tip: Reserve a table ahead of time, preferably around sunset. You can book directly through the Pangas Beach Club reservation page.
Dragonfly Bar & Grill
Dragonfly isn't exactly a hidden gem - it's been one of Tamarindo's most popular dinner spots for years. But tucked away on a side street, away from the busier beachfront restaurants, it certainly feels like one.
The open-air garden setting gives Dragonfly a more intimate, romantic atmosphere. The menu is an eclectic mix of Asian-inspired dishes and international favourites, including sushi, seafood, steaks, and curries. There's also an extensive cocktail selection.
It's a great option for couples looking for a date night or groups wanting a slightly more upscale dinner without the beach-club atmosphere. Expect higher-end Tamarindo prices, but a more relaxed setting than you might expect.
Tip: Dragonfly is popular for dinner, so consider reserving ahead. You can find contact information on the official Dragonfly website.
Little Lucha
Little Lucha was the restaurant we found ourselves returning to most in Tamarindo - which probably says more than a long list of glowing adjectives ever could.
It's a casual, unpretentious Mexican-inspired spot serving delicious tacos, burritos, and some seriously good churros. There's a selection of hot sauces to spice things up, and compared to many of Tamarindo's tourist-oriented restaurants, the prices are refreshingly reasonable.
If you're deciding between Little Lucha and the more famous Green Papaya Taco Bar, we'd choose Little Lucha. Green Papaya wins on Instagram appeal, but Little Lucha is where we'd actually go back for another meal.
Tip: Little Lucha usually hosts live music on some Friday evenings, making it a fun option for a casual night out.
Patagonia Argentinian Grill & Restaurant

Patagonia is one of Tamarindo's better-known Argentinian steakhouses. The menu focuses on grilled steaks, chimichurri, and traditional Argentinian dishes, alongside pasta and seafood options. Portions are generous, and the relaxed atmosphere makes it a good choice for a casual dinner with friends or family.
Surprisingly, one of the highlights for us was the piña colada! Not necessarily what you'd expect to stand out at an Argentinian grill, but definitely worth trying.
Patagonia isn't particularly cheap, but if you're craving a proper steak dinner rather than another beachfront meal, it's a solid option.
Namu Restaurant

Namu Restaurant offers something a little different. Located directly on Tamarindo Beach, it combines ocean views, tropical surroundings, and a lively atmosphere with occasional live entertainment.
What really sets Namu apart is its Fire & Silks show, featuring fire dancing and aerial silk performances. It's a fun option for couples or groups looking for an evening that's about more than just the food.
Tip: Performances aren't held every night, so check Namu's official website for upcoming events and confirm the schedule when booking. Reservations are recommended for show nights (Start time is usually around 7:30pm).
Best Cafes and Breakfast Spots in Tamarindo
Breakfast in Tamarindo is surprisingly good for a beach town. Whether you want specialty coffee, smoothie bowls, pastries, or a proper sit-down breakfast before surfing or exploring, there are plenty of strong options.
Nordico Coffee House
Nordico is probably the most talked-about cafe in Tamarindo. It has a modern coffee-shop atmosphere with strong specialty coffee, smoothie bowls, breakfast plates, and pastries. With a modern atmosphere, air-conditioned seating, and reliable Wi-Fi, it's a great place to escape the heat and enjoy a proper morning coffee.
Sol Cafe & Bakery

Sol Bakery is a lovely spot for breakfast or a coffee break, serving fresh pastries, sandwiches, and other brunch favourites. It's also one of Tamarindo's prettiest cafés, with cute décor, a relaxed outdoor setting, and twinkling lights that make it particularly charming in the evenings.
Cha Cafe
Cha Cafe is a cozy option that is recommended for quality coffee and relaxed breakfasts. It's right in the center of Tamarindo, but is often overlooked due to its smaller signage. Compared to some of Tamarindo's busier cafes, it can feel a bit calmer and more laid back.
Best Local Costa Rican Food in Tamarindo
For traditional Costa Rican food, look for a local soda - a casual eatery serving home-style dishes, usually at more affordable prices than tourist restaurants.
Soda El Buen Comer
Soda El Buen Comer is a no-frills option for traditional Costa Rican food in Tamarindo. Expect dishes like casados (rice, beans, plantains, salad, and your choice of protein), breakfast gallo pinto, and fresh fruit juices.
It's a good alternative to Tamarindo's international restaurants and beach clubs, particularly if you want to try everyday Costa Rican cooking.
Best Sunset Restaurants in Tamarindo
One of the best things about dining in Tamarindo is watching the sun set over the Pacific. If you're planning dinner around golden hour, our guide to the best sunset spots in Tamarindo includes timing tips, viewpoints, and a few things we wish we'd known before visiting.
Pangas Beach Club
Yes, it deserves another mention specifically for sunset. If you can time your reservation well, sunset dinner at Pangas is one of the best dining experiences in Tamarindo.
Langosta Beach Club

If you're looking for something a little more relaxed, Langosta Beach Club is a lovely alternative. Located towards the southern end of Tamarindo Beach, near Playa Langosta, it offers a quieter, resort-style atmosphere with beachfront dining, palm trees, an infinity pool, and gorgeous ocean views.
If you're deciding where to stay, rather than just where to eat, our Playa Langosta vs Tamarindo comparison explains the differences in atmosphere, beaches, walkability, and nightlife.
The Langosta Beach Club menu features seafood, burgers, salads, and cocktails, but the real attraction is the setting. It's particularly appealing if you'd rather spend a leisurely afternoon by the water before settling in for sunset drinks.
Worth knowing: Langosta Beach Club offers day passes for non-members, but access to its facilities is restricted. Check with the club about restaurant reservations and access requirements before visiting.
After-Hours Drinks
Chiquita's Bar
If dinner's wrapped up and you're not ready to call it a night, Chiquita's is a fun option for cocktails, live music, and DJs. (It also serves a full food menu.)
It's one of the only spots on the Tamarindo strip that stays open until around 2am, which makes it the natural end point for most nights out, but be warned: on busy weekend nights, this is more of a club experience than a quiet drink.
Rumors Bar
Rumors has an industrial-chic atmosphere, creative cocktails, and a menu featuring Mediterranean and Asian-inspired dishes. It's a stylish place to start your evening, but the energy picks up later as DJs take over and the space becomes more of a party venue.
Sharky's
Sharky's is Tamarindo's classic sports bar, with plenty of screens, cold beers, cocktails, and regular events including karaoke and beer pong. It's casual, lively, and a good choice if there's a game on or you're looking for an unpretentious night out.
One thing to remember: while Tamarindo has a lively bar scene, much of the town closes earlier than you might expect. Our practical Tamarindo travel tips cover opening hours, food delivery, getting around, and other quirks worth knowing before your trip.
Best Cheap Eats in Tamarindo
Not every meal in Tamarindo needs to involve expensive beachfront restaurants. For affordable food, local sodas are usually your best bet, but these two spots are also worth considering.
Little Lucha
Our favourite casual restaurant in Tamarindo is also one of the best-value options. Between the delicious tacos, homemade hot sauces, and excellent churros, it's somewhere we'd happily eat again and again.
El Mercadito de Tamarindo
If everyone in your group wants something different, El Mercadito is a great solution. This lively outdoor food hall brings together vendors serving everything from tacos and pizza to poke bowls, ceviche, and other international dishes. It's casual, reasonably priced, and especially convenient for families or groups who can't agree on dinner.
The relaxed atmosphere makes it a fun place to spend an evening without committing to a more expensive sit-down restaurant.
Other Tamarindo Restaurants: Worth It or Skip?
Green Papaya Taco Bar

Green Papaya is one of Tamarindo's most popular restaurants, thanks largely to its tropical atmosphere, outdoor swing seating, and margaritas.
Our verdict? Great for drinks, but we'd skip it for dinner. The setting is genuinely fun, but we found the food underwhelming for the price (those are some pricey tacos!). If you're craving tacos, we'd recommend Little Lucha instead - better food for less money.
Worth knowing: Green Papaya is cash-only, accepting US dollars and Costa Rican colones.
Nogui's
A Tamarindo institution since 1974, Nogui's sits right on the beach at the end of the main beach road. It's a laid-back spot serving fresh seafood, traditional Costa Rican dishes, sandwiches, and its famous cream pies.
The beachfront location is the main attraction, making it a lovely choice for a relaxed lunch or sunset drink without the more upscale atmosphere of Pangas Beach Club.
Is the food in Tamarindo good?
Honestly? Yes... with an asterisk.
Tamarindo isn't the cheapest place to eat in Costa Rica, but the variety is genuinely impressive. The food scene caters heavily to tourists (not super-discerning foodies), which means some restaurants prioritize atmosphere over food quality, and higher prices don't always mean better meals.
Pangas Beach Club was our standout, with Little Lucha being our favourite casual option. But Tamarindo's real strength is its variety. You can enjoy fresh seafood on the beach one night, tacos or steak the next, and an excellent coffee and smoothie bowl the following morning.

Frequently Asked Questions
Our pick is Pangas Beach Club, thanks to its excellent food, beautiful beachfront setting, and sunset atmosphere. For something more casual and affordable, we love Little Lucha.
Compared to many other parts of Costa Rica, yes. Popular beachfront restaurants often charge prices comparable to North American establishments. For cheaper meals, try local sodas and casual eateries.
Try Soda El Buen Comer for traditional Costa Rican dishes like casados and gallo pinto. For a wider selection of authentic, affordable local food, consider exploring outside Tamarindo's tourist centre.
For popular dinner restaurants during high season (December-April), reservations are recommended, especially around sunset. Most casual restaurants and cafés are easier to visit without booking.
Where to Eat in Tamarindo
The best restaurant in Tamarindo really depends on what kind of experience you want. It's likely not the destination for serious foodies, but there are still some genuinely memorable meals to be had here. Our favourites weren't necessarily the most famous restaurants - they were the ones where the food, atmosphere, and experience felt worth the money.
If you want:
- A memorable beachfront dinner: Pangas Beach Club
- A quieter upscale beach atmosphere: Langosta Beach Club
- Casual group-friendly variety: El Mercadito
- Great coffee and breakfast: Sol Cafe & Bakery
- Value for money: Little Lucha
- Cocktails and music after hours: Chiquita's
The good news is that Tamarindo is small enough that it's easy to try several places during your trip.
