If you're planning a trip to Tamarindo, there's a good chance you'll eventually run into the same question we did: Should you stay in Playa Langosta or Tamarindo?
At first glance, they seem almost interchangeable. The two beach areas sit right beside each other on Costa Rica's Pacific coast, and you can technically walk between them in under 30 minutes depending on where you stay.
But after spending time in both areas, we realized they offer surprisingly different experiences.
Tamarindo is busier, more walkable, and packed with restaurants, shops, nightlife, surf schools, and beach activity. Playa Langosta feels quieter, more residential, and noticeably calmer once the day-trippers disappear. Neither is objectively "better." It really depends on what kind of trip you want.
This guide compares Playa Langosta vs Tamarindo honestly - including crowds, sunsets, swimming, surfing, walkability, sandflies, and who each area is best suited for.

TLDR: Playa Langosta vs Tamarindo
Choose Tamarindo if you:
- Want restaurants, nightlife, shops, and energy nearby
- Prefer staying somewhere fully walkable
- Don't want to rely on a car
- Enjoy social beach atmospheres
- Plan to surf, take lessons, or be active during the day
Choose Playa Langosta if you:
- Prefer quieter beaches and fewer crowds
- Want a more relaxed, upscale atmosphere
- Care more about sunsets and peaceful evenings
- Don't mind walking or driving into Tamarindo
- Want somewhere that feels less touristy
- Are an experienced surfer looking for better waves
For many travelers, especially couples, Playa Langosta often ends up feeling more relaxing while still being close enough to Tamarindo to enjoy both.
Where is Playa Langosta?
Playa Langosta sits directly south of Tamarindo Beach in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The two areas are connected by a road that follows the coastline, and depending on where you stay, you may be able to walk between them fairly easily. (Just be mindful that there isn't a lot of shade so you'll be walking under Costa Rica's hot sun.)
(Note that the beaches themselves aren't directly connected - the walk follows the road rather than the shoreline, so it's not the beachside stroll it might sound like on a map.)
That said, the experience changes quickly once you leave Tamarindo proper. Tamarindo feels like a busy surf town. Langosta feels more like a residential beach community with a quieter atmosphere, boutique hotels, condos, and quieter roads.
Some visitors consider Playa Langosta a completely separate destination, but in practice it feels more like Tamarindo's calmer neighbour.
For getting to the area, the closest international airport is Guanacaste (Liberia) Airport, roughly a 1.5-hour drive - see our Tamarindo travel guide for more transportation details.
Tamarindo vs Playa Langosta Atmosphere
This is probably the biggest difference between the two.
Playa Tamarindo
Tamarindo is lively and the commercial hub of the area. You'll find:
- Surf schools
- Beach vendors
- Restaurants and cafes
- Bars and nightlife
- Grocery stores
- Tour companies
- Busy sunsets
- Lots of tourists
There's usually something happening. For many travelers, that energy is part of the appeal. Tamarindo is convenient, social, and easy. You can walk almost everywhere and there's no shortage of places to eat or things to do.
But it also means:
- More noise
- More traffic
- Busier beaches
- More crowds around sunset
Tamarindo Diria is one of the most popular beachfront resorts, while Capitán Suizo offers a quieter boutique alternative just at the edge of town. We last stayed at Wyndham Tamarindo, which is located on higher ground in Tamarindo (about 15 minutes walk to the beach, with a free shuttle to drive you there), allowing for some lovely sunset views.

Playa Langosta
Playa Langosta feels noticeably quieter. The area actually feels more like a small community than a busy surf town.
Many travelers consider Playa Langosta one of the best beaches near Tamarindo for quieter sunsets and fewer crowds. The roads are calmer, the beaches are less crowded, and evenings feel more relaxed overall. Cala Luna Boutique Hotel and Sueño del Mar are two of the most recommended stays in the area.
It doesn't have the same concentration of restaurants, bars, or shops as Tamarindo, but that's also part of the reason many people prefer it. After spending time in both areas, Langosta felt more peaceful and much less commercialized.
It's especially appealing for:
- Couples
- Families
- Longer stays
- Travelers wanting quieter evenings
- People working remotely
Langosta also borders Marino Las Baulas National Park to the south - one of the world's most important leatherback sea turtle nesting sites. It's not the main reason most people choose this area, but for wildlife-curious travelers it's a quiet bonus that Tamarindo proper doesn't offer.
Beyond the beach itself, the estuary at the southern end is worth exploring - boat tours run through Marino Las Baulas and are a popular add-on for guests staying in Langosta.
That said, if you enjoy nightlife or want constant activity nearby, Langosta can feel too quiet for some travelers.
Tamarindo Beach vs Playa Langosta Beach: Which is Better?
This depends entirely on what you want from a beach day. Both Tamarindo Beach and Langosta Beach are beautiful beaches, but they offer very different experiences.
Tamarindo Beach
Tamarindo Beach is larger, busier, and more active.
It's popular for:
- Surf lessons
- Beginner surfing
- Beach bars
- Long beach walks
- Watching sunsets with a crowd
- Easy beach access from town
There's a social atmosphere that many travelers enjoy. If you want convenience and energy, Tamarindo Beach usually wins. But it can also feel crowded, especially during peak travel periods.
Tamarindo Beach also has more nearby restaurants, vendors, and shaded areas compared to many parts of Playa Langosta.
Playa Langosta
Playa Langosta feels quieter and more natural. The beach itself has a long crescent shape with soft tan sand, and parts of it feel noticeably more rugged - rocky sections, tide pools, and a natural estuary give it a wilder character than the wider, more open stretch at Tamarindo.
Compared to Tamarindo:
- Fewer people
- Less beach activity
- More peaceful sunsets
- More space to relax
For travelers looking for a quieter beach experience, Langosta is often the better choice. However, it's important to note that the ocean conditions can sometimes be rougher depending on tides and surf conditions.

Which area has better sunsets?
Honestly, both beaches have beautiful sunsets. But the experience feels different.
Tamarindo Sunsets
Sunsets in Tamarindo feel social and energetic.
You'll usually see:
- Crowds gathering on the beach
- Surfers in the water
- Music nearby
- Vendors and beach activity
- Restaurants filling up afterward
It can be fun and lively.
Playa Langosta Sunsets
Sunsets in Playa Langosta feel calmer. There are fewer people around, less noise, and more uninterrupted stretches of beach. For us, Langosta felt more relaxing overall at sunset. If sunset photography or peaceful evening walks are important to you, Playa Langosta may be the better fit.
If you're specifically planning your evenings around sunset, our Tamarindo sunset guide covers the best viewpoints, and what to expect at different beaches nearby.
Sandflies and Mosquitoes: The Honest Reality
This is something many travel guides barely mention.
Sandflies and mosquitoes can absolutely be an issue around sunset in both Tamarindo and Playa Langosta. In our experience, Playa Langosta sometimes felt worse simply because parts of the beach are quieter, more natural, and closer to vegetation and estuary areas.
That doesn't mean you'll definitely get attacked by bugs every evening, but it's worth preparing for.
Bring:
- Bug spray
- Lightweight long sleeves for sunset
- After-bite cream if you react badly to bites
A lot of visitors arrive expecting perfect tropical beach evenings and end up surprised by how aggressive the bugs can be.
Is Playa Langosta walkable to Tamarindo?
Yes - but with some caveats. Depending on where you stay in Langosta, walking into Tamarindo can take anywhere from around 20 to 30 minutes. Most of the walk will be on pavements or the side of the road.
During the day, the walk is generally straightforward.
At night:
- Some sections are darker
- Sidewalks are inconsistent
- You'll want a phone flashlight
Many people still walk between the two regularly, especially for dinner.
If you plan to go into Tamarindo frequently for restaurants or nightlife, staying near the northern part of Langosta makes the walk easier. Otherwise, golf carts, bikes, taxis, and rental cars are common options.
Which Area Is Better for Surfing?
Tamarindo is generally better for beginner surfers.
It has:
- More surf schools
- Easier board rentals
- Beginner-friendly waves
- More instructors available
That makes it one of the most popular surf destinations in Costa Rica for first-timers. Tamarindo has far more surf shops, board rentals, and beginner surf schools than Playa Langosta. Tamarindo is generally better for water sports, surf lessons, and day tours.
Depending on tides and season, Playa Langosta can experience stronger currents and rougher surf than Tamarindo Beach. This makes it better suited for more experienced surfers depending on conditions. In fact, the majority of experienced surfers we met in Tamarindo, all expressed a preference for surfing in Playa Langosta over Playa Tamarindo. The strong currents also make Playa Langosta less suited for weaker or younger swimmers.
If surfing is one of the main reasons for your trip, Tamarindo is usually the more convenient base.

Families: Tamarindo or Playa Langosta?
When it comes to which is the better area for families, both can work well, but in different ways.
Tamarindo is better for:
- Convenience
- Easy access to restaurants
- Walkability
- Activity options
- Families without a car
- Larger resorts
Playa Langosta is better for:
- Quieter evenings
- Less noise
- More relaxed atmosphere
- Families wanting slower-paced trips
A lot depends on your travel style. Some families love the convenience and energy of Tamarindo. Others appreciate having a quieter place to return to at the end of the day.
Atmosphere and Luxury: How Do They Compare?
Generally speaking, Playa Langosta feels more upscale overall.
You'll find:
- Boutique hotels
- Luxury condos
- Quieter residential streets
- Less commercial activity
Tamarindo has luxury accommodations too, but the overall atmosphere feels busier and more casual. Langosta often appeals more to travelers looking for a quieter, more polished resort-style atmosphere while still staying close to Tamarindo.
Should You Stay in Playa Langosta or Tamarindo?
For first-time visitors who want convenience, nightlife, restaurants, and easy access to everything, Tamarindo is usually the easier choice. Most restaurants, surf shops, and nightlife in Tamarindo are concentrated near the main street close to Tamarindo Beach.
For travelers wanting quieter beaches, calmer evenings, and a more relaxed atmosphere, Playa Langosta is often the better fit.
For first-timer visitors, who aren't sure what they're looking for, we'd recommend staying in central Tamarindo. If we returned for a longer stay, we'd probably choose Playa Langosta while still spending time in Tamarindo regularly.
The nice thing is that you don't really have to choose one or the other completely. They're close enough that you can easily enjoy both during the same trip.
