What to Pack for Las Vegas: A Guide for First Timers

Published: Oct 2, 2025 by Travel & Chai · This post may contain affiliate links · Leave a Comment

Packing for Las Vegas isn't as simple as tossing a few flashy outfits in a carry-on. Sure, Sin City is all about neon lights, sequins, and poolside glam - but the desert climate, marathon Strip walks, and fine dining dress codes mean you'll need to pack smart.

This guide breaks it down: from clothing and shoes to tech, toiletries, and quirky Vegas-specific must-haves. Whether you're heading for a weekend of shows and casinos, a poolside escape, or a first-timer blowout, here's everything you need to pack on your first trip to Vegas.

    Las Vegas Packing Essentials

We'll start with a list of essential things to consider packing for your first trip to Las Vegas. (And once we're done with that, we'll go over what you don't need!)

    The Right Luggage

Vegas isn't backpacker-friendly. You'll want structured luggage that can handle souvenirs and outfits.

    • Carry-On Spinner Suitcase - Lightweight and easy to maneuver through airports and hotels. I recommend the Monos Carry-On or the Away Carry-On because they're perfectly-sized for most airlines while still be functional (and also pretty easy on the eyes...as far as luggage goes).
    • Personal Item Backpack - Sleek enough for shows, spacious enough for snacks and water. The Nomatic Navigator makes for a perfect daypack thanks to it's good looks and functionality. However, if you're not looking to spend too much on a backpack (very understandable!), take a look at something like Osprey Ultralight - it's a great alternative that lacks of the structure of the Nomatic, while maintaining a good amount of storage capacity and a light weight.

Clothing: What to Wear in Las Vegas

Las Vegas is all about versatility. Pack with daytime casual comfort and nighttime glamour in mind, but this depends on what you want to do. The options below are split by type of activity to make it easier for you to know what you'll need based on your plans:

    Daytime (Exploring & Casinos)

    • Breathable t-shirts, polos, or tank tops
    • Shorts or lightweight trousers or jeans (dark wash looks dressier)
    • Comfortable sneakers (must-have for walking the Strip)

Evening (Shows, Clubs & Fancy Dinners)

    • Men: Button-up shirts, dark jeans or slacks, blazer optional
    • Women: Cocktail dresses, jumpsuits, or chic two-piece sets
    • A pair of "wow factor" shoes for nights out

    Poolside

    • Swimsuits (bring at least two - pools are central to Vegas life)
    • Flip flops or sliders
    • Cover-ups or kaftans (you can also get away with just wearing a t-shirt. Something to help protect you from the Vegas sun when you need it!)

Pro-Tip: Even some casual spots in Vegas skew dressy at night. Pack at least one "Vegas glam" outfit you wouldn't normally wear at home.

    Shoes

Las Vegas means walking. A lot. Like, 20,000 steps per day kind of a lot. Wearing the right kind of shoes is incredibly important. Your feet will thank you.

    • All-Day Sneakers - Stylish but supportive. The Hoka Clifton are excellent all-day walking shoes that look great on both men and women. If you'd prefer something slightly more low key, check the Hoka Transport, I wore mine while walking all around the cobbled streets of Tuscany.
    • Dress Shoes / Heels - For nightclubs and upscale dining. (Tip: bring foldable flats for when the heels come off!)
    • Poolside Sandals - Quick-dry and lightweight.

    Toiletries & Skincare

The desert air + casino air-conditioning = a skincare nightmare. Pack wisely:

    • Moisturizer - You're looking for something hydrating but lightweight. Reem and I usually grab a travel-sized CeraVe moisturizer to share. Not only does it meet airline regulations, while being super lightweight with SPF 30, but it's easy on the wallet too.
    • SPF 30+ Sunscreen - Honestly, ESSENTIAL essential.
    • Lip Balm with SPF - Overlooked, but handy.

    Tech & Gadgets

Thankfully, this is an area where you likely won't need too much. You'll want to capture memories and stay charged, but beyond that it's pretty simple sailing...unless you're a blogger or a photographer, in which case: there is no such thing as truly travelling light. (IYKYK.)

    • Portable Power Bank - Non-negotiable. You can use any portable power bank, but I recommend the Shargeek 170 because it works with most devices, and has a high battery capacity (meaning I don't have to constantly recharge it!). On the flip side, it's a little bigger and more expensive than some competing power banks like Anker's PowerCore 10K.
    • Universal Charging Cables - Vegas hotels don't always have convenient outlets.
    • Universal plug adapter - Depending on where you're coming from, it's always handy to have a travel adapter to make sure you can use all your electronics.

    Nice to haves

While there are a lot of shops all around Las Vegas, and it's easy to pick up missing items (like deodorant, or a bottle of water), here are a few items that will just make your Las Vegas trip a little more comfortable.

    • Light Jacket or Wrap - Casinos keep the air conditioning on and can be freezing for some.
    • Earplugs & Eye Mask - Depending where you're stay, hotels can be noisy late into the night.
    • Portable Fan - This was recommended to us by a frequent Vegas visitor, and it absolutely makes sense. For summer trips when the desert heat feels brutal, a small, easy to carry, portable fan provides a little relief just when you need it. These rechargeable fans also double as a power bank - they're not the most powerful or versatile, but will do if you're in an absolute pinch.

    What not to pack

While the Las Vegas packing list above has plenty of nice to have items, there are also things you may be wondering that you realistically won't need on your first trip to Vegas (unless of course you're going for a specific purpose).

    • Too Many Heels - One or two pairs will do in most cases.
    • Formal Business Wear - Unless you're at a convention.
    • Overstuffed Toiletry Kit - Hotels stock basics, and drugstores are everywhere.
    • Bulky Jackets - A lightweight layer is enough year-round. If you tend to get colder, a mid-layer will help you. Summer highs hit 40°C (104°F). Winter nights drop to 5°C (41°F).

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need formalwear in Vegas?

Not necessarily, but upscale restaurants and clubs expect smart-casual or cocktail attire.

Is it safe to carry cash in Las Vegas?

Typically yes, but stick to small bills for tipping. Use cards or digital wallets for big purchases.

    Should I pack snacks?

If you want to save money, yes. Convenience store snacks on the Strip are pricey.

Can I bring my backpack to casinos?

Depending on the size of your backpack, yes. But be aware that clubs and some shows restrict bag size.

Do I need sunscreen if I'm indoors?

No, but the walk between casinos adds up, and desert sun is intense. If you're truly within your hotel and not exposed to the sun, you won't need sunscreen.

What should I wear to a Las Vegas club?

Smart, stylish, and a little bold. Smart casual is permitted to some clubs, but think cocktail attire if you're going to a fancier or more popular one.

Pro tip: If you want sneakers, choose minimalist leather styles that read "dressy," not gym.

Can I wear sneakers in casinos?

Yes. Casinos are generally relaxed. Clean, stylish sneakers are fine on the gaming floor and in most restaurants.

Final Thoughts: Pack Smart, Play Hard

Packing for Las Vegas is about balance: comfort for long days, glam for unforgettable nights, and practicality for desert conditions. Stick to this list, add your personal flair, and you'll be Strip-ready without the dreaded "I overpacked" regret.

Now, all that's left? Book the shows, pack your sequins, and get ready to live it up in Vegas.
